Praying "Save Me From Myself" (PrayerLife)

Istanbul - Straights of Bosphorus
Today a friend asked me this: "When you pray, do you pray "Save me from my circumstances? or "Save me from myself?"

My answer to them was: "Both. But my prayers are more about "Save me from myself."" For two reasons.

1. If I get rescued from myself some of my negative circumstances will change, since it is often I who have brought about the circumstances I am now in. My messed-up, unhealed self creates messed-up circumstances. And note: my changing circumstances, be they good or bad, will not change what's needed to be changed in the depths of my heart.

2. God's rescue of me includes the fruit of the Spirit - things like love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control. And faith and hope. All these things are essentially non-circumstantial. I am promised, e.g., a peace that is non-circumstantial and thereby "passes all human understanding." So if I get Spirit-rescued this way I live uncontrolled by life's circumstances.

Pray today for God to rescue you from your own self.
