Back Home

NYC

I'm home from teaching and speaking in NYC. I began to lose my voice on Saturday and Sunday (I spoke 4 times on Saturday, twice on Sunday).

Linda, Holly and I arrived back in Monroe Sunday afternoon and immediately went to Josh Bentley's ordination service. What a beautiful family event that was!

I began my MCCC teaching yesterday with two Philosophy of Religion courses. After explaining my syllabus I presented Anselm's ontological argument. This argument never ceases to fascinate and puzzle students. When the logical claim of inference finally clicks in it's fun to see the look on students' faces.

After one of the classes, in which I talked about the Anselmian omni-attributes of God, one student talked with me about the omnibenevolence of God. He said: "In the Old Testament God sure isn't all-loving. God is a God of wrath and really get p-oed at times." I told them that in the days ahead I'll be posting comments and explanations of theistic philosopher Paul Copan's Is God a Moral Monster? Copan's book will help us better understand the supposed OT "God of wrath." As always, a socio-cultural and socio-rhetorical hermeneutic is needed to understand ancient texts.

Tomorrow morning Randy Clark and his team will be with us at Redeemer, and off we go with 5 fun days of teaching and ministry. Randy will culminate these times by preaching this Sunday.

On Monday evening I travel to Payne Theological Seminary to teach my Spiritual Formation class to M.Div. students. I'm working on a presentation of the prayer life of Martin Luther King, Jr., from Lewis Baldwin's excellent study.

After coming back home on the 21st, I'll begin to prepare for the Sioux Falls Outpouring weekend I'll be speaking and teaching at. And Linda and Holly will join me again in this trip.

Then... February... and a but of a break from traveling...
